NinerNotice: Severe Weather Preparations and Updates
University officials are monitoring Hurricane Helene forming in the Gulf Coast and how it could impact both main campus and the Dubois Center.
What to Expect
As of today’s forecast, the Charlotte area could see heavy rainfall and gusty winds, which could result in flash flooding and scattered power outages. Rain is forecast to begin this evening with the most severe impacts expected Thursday evening through Friday morning.
Currently, there are no anticipated condition changes to University operations due to the weather. The University remains open for business. However, recognizing that conditions could vary widely across the region, all faculty, staff and students are encouraged to exercise caution.
Remember: Should conditions in Charlotte worsen and University operations become interrupted, a NinerAlert will be sent. It is likely you will receive automatic weather NinerAlerts during this event.
What You Should Do
All students and employees should monitor their local weather conditions and use good judgment when determining if it is safe to travel.
- Faculty: Please consider using virtual learning as much as possible. You are encouraged to be understanding with students who may be experiencing local weather conditions that could hinder their travel or connectivity. Make sure to communicate directly with students about any changes to your class schedule or location. These schedule interruption guidelines might be helpful.
- Employees: If you have an active telework agreement in place and can do so, you are encouraged to consider working with your manager to arrange to work remotely. Please note: Offices must maintain minimal staffing to remain open during normal business hours.
- Managers: As always, please use your discretion and work with any employee who is scheduled to report to campus this week but is unable to do so as a result of safety concerns. These options may include remote work, making up time, time off, etc. Should you have any questions about managing employees’ time, please refer to the Kronos timekeeping system FAQs.
- Students: Please monitor your email closely for information from your professors. If you have concerns about your travel because of local weather conditions, make sure to communicate directly with your faculty members.
