The rolling power outages for campus will continue as planned May 13-19. These outages will allow Facilities Management to safely test and repair underground electrical circuits. More information is available on the campus disruptions webpage.

Free Food for the UNC Charlotte Community on Thursday
Belk, Inc. is generously bringing food trucks to campus tomorrow, Thursday, May 9, to support the University community. Just bring your 49er ID card and enjoy lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. from any of the food trucks parked across from the Popp Martin Student Union.

As a result of increased security measures and the resulting time necessary to get all guests in and out of Barnhardt Student Activity Center (Halton Arena), the commencement ceremony scheduled for 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 11, for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences has been pushed back to 4 p.m. on the same day.

  • Friday, May 10, 5 p.m. — College of Arts + Architecture, Belk College of Business and College of Health and Human Services

Niner Notice — Saturday 3 p.m. Commencement Moved to 4 p.m.

As a result of increased security measures and the resulting time necessary to get all guests in and out of Barnhardt Student Activity Center (Halton Arena), the commencement ceremony scheduled for 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 11, for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences has been pushed back to 4 p.m. on the same day.

Doors will open at 2:30 p.m. Graduates and their guests are encouraged to allow plenty of time to get through security.

The 10 a.m. ceremony will continue as planned.

Graduates and those faculty and staff involved in the ceremonies will receive more information via email from the Commencement Office.

Final Exam Schedule
The updated exam schedule is now available. Please note: There are no changes to Monday’s schedule. Faculty and students should monitor their email for more information.

Chartwells-Sponsored Events
To support the UNC Charlotte community during exam week, Chartwells is providing the following events:

  • Tuesday, May 7 — 9 a.m. – Starbucks coffee table outside Student Union; 11 a.m. – Papa John’s pizza and Chick-fil-A wrapped sandwiches outside the Student Union.
  • Wednesday, May 8 — 9 a.m. – Peet’s coffee table outside of Atkins Library; 11 a.m. – Subway sandwiches and Salsarita’s chips and salsa outside the Student Union.

Timekeeping in Kronos
Employees should consult the Kronos WRF Time Accounting Guidelines document for information on accounting for time Tuesday, April 30, and Wednesday, May 1. Resuming Regular Operations Thursday

UNC Charlotte will return to its regular operating schedule effective 12 a.m., Thursday, May 2.

Employees should report as scheduled; however, support services to assist those affected by the events of April 30 will continue as the University community unites to move forward.

To conclude the semester and to allow for the challenges that some students may be experiencing, a new exam schedule with options for completing courses has been developed. The details for students and faculty will be forthcoming tomorrow morning in emails from Academic Affairs.

  • To accommodate the necessary changes to exams, the 1 p.m. commencement ceremony scheduled for Friday, May 10, will be moved to 5 p.m. on Friday, May 10. The ceremony will still take place in Halton Arena.

Vigil to Be Held in Halton Arena
The student-organized vigil planned for 6 p.m. this evening will take place in Halton Arena, located in the Barnhardt Student Activity Center. Note that this is a change from the original location. Parking will be free for this event.

Below is the latest on campus operations and events as of 10:45 a.m., Wednesday, May 1.

Support Services

  • Family Assistance Center (FAC) — The FAC is open in the Barnhardt Student Activity Center (SAC) to provide specialized support services to victims and their immediate families.

Campus vigil
A student-organized vigil to unite and support the UNC Charlotte community is planned for 6 p.m., Wednesday, May 1, in the University’s Halton Arena, located in the Barnhardt Student Activity Center (building 46 on this campus map.) Parking decks are noted on the map; here are directions to use light rail to campus.

Campus operating condition
The University has received approval for a Condition 3 (C3) closed status. All time will be forgiven for non-mandatory employees. More information on the C3 status is available in this FAQ. The C3 status is currently in place until 11:59 p.m. tonight, Wednesday, May 1. More information will be shared on tomorrow’s operations by 5 p.m. today.

Exams
Exams through Sunday remain canceled. More information on exams will be released as soon as possible.

Commencement
Commencement ceremonies will continue as planned. Graduates should monitor their email for additional information from the Commencement Office.

Retrieving Items
For students and employees who had to leave items behind in buildings yesterday, they will be open today for 30 minutes, with the exception of Atkins Library, on the following schedule:

  • J. Murrey Atkins Library — Open at 11 a.m. to retrieve items; open for all at noon.
  • Zone 1 — McEniry, Botanical Gardens McMillan Greenhouse, Prospector, Auxiliary Services, Smith and Friday, open at 1:30 p.m. to retrieve items
  • Zone 2 — Cato, Storrs, CAB, Cedar, Hickory and Sycamore, open at 2 p.m. to retrieve items

NinerAlert: University moving to C2 through 11:59 p.m. Wednesday

As a result of the tragic shooting on campus today, the University will be in Condition 2 (C2) suspended operations effective immediately until 11:59 p.m., Wednesday, May 1. All scheduled activities are canceled.

  • Students should continue to monitor the Emergency Management website for an updated list of available services. Please be aware that media may be on campus tomorrow. You are under no obligation to be interviewed and are free to decline.
  • Non-mandatory employees must not report to work. Refer to this FAQ for more information about what to do in a C2 status.
  • Mandatory employees should report as directed by supervisors.

(Update 9:40 p.m.)

The campus remains on lockdown while police clear each building. This could take several more hours. It is believed that there is no ongoing threat, but police are taking every precaution to ensure safety.

Remain where you are and be prepared to identify yourself to police, raise your hands and follow officer commands.

Anyone outside a building should report to the Student Union or depart campus.

Exams are canceled through Sunday.

Students, if you have not yet contacted your family to let them know you are safe, please do so.

Campus Update 8:49 p.m. on-campus shooting, campus remains on lockdown

The campus remains on lockdown while police clear each building. This could take several more hours.

It is believed that there is no ongoing threat, but police are taking every precaution to ensure safety.

Students, employees, and visitors in campus buildings, including residence halls, should remain sheltered in place. Anyone in a building should be prepared to identify themselves to police and follow officer commands.

Anyone outside a building may now report to the Student Union. Crown Commons is closing at 9:30 p.m.

The family reunification center is located at Harris Teeter at 8600 University City Blvd.

All campus activity is cancelled until further notice.

The media is meeting at the O’Charley’s parking lot.

Information about on-campus shooting, campus remains on lockdown

At approximately 5:40 PM, shots were fired on the UNC Charlotte campus. Campus police and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) responded quickly to the scene and the campus was placed on lockdown. The suspected shooter is in custody. While police continue to secure the campus, it is believed that there is no ongoing threat.

Buildings are being cleared by law enforcement. Students, employees, and visitors in campus buildings, including residence halls, should remain sheltered in place until otherwise directed. Anyone in a building should be prepared to identify themselves to police and follow officer commands. Anyone outside on campus should move to the front of his or her residence hall, move to the front fields by the main entrance, or depart campus. All others are advised to remain away from campus until an all clear is issued.

UNC Charlotte police and CMPD have established a family reunification center at the Harris Teeter at 8600 University City Blvd.
